our story

Growing up, Ryan participated in many sports-gymnastics, soccer, baseball, football, basketball, wrestling, rowing, and track. He focused on football and track in high school then rowed at The Ohio State University. During his undergrad studies, he was also proud to be a part of the three-man team that won the 2008 American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Physiology Quiz Bowl.

After college graduation, Ryan was looking for something to fill the void that collegiate sports left behind. He was immediately drawn to the competitive, yet supportive, team-like environment found in the CrossFit gym. He fell in love with the culture and decided to dedicate his life to introducing it to others. “The discovery of CrossFit brought my passion, experience, and education together into what is now Ohio Strength.”

“Now that Ohio Strength has been servicing hundreds of clients for over 5+ years, we’ve had a great opportunity to really figure out who we want to be as coaches and as a gym. We’ve learned that life is so much bigger than simply being competitive in CrossFit. We’ve seen marriages, births, job changes, and dealt with the loss of loved ones together as a fitness community. We support each other to lead productive and healthy lives through the coaching of balanced and active lifestyles that include great nutrition, fun and effective workouts, and sustainable habits. When someone joins Ohio Strength, we want them to be a member for life, and we keep that in mind every day as we strive to foster deep and meaningful relationships, deliver incredible fitness results and focus on continuous improvement of our offerings. I sincerely hope that we have the opportunity to meet with you to help you navigate your own fitness journey for years to come!”

Brittany’s competitive spirit comes from the years she spent as an equestrian athlete. She rode horses in high school and college and spent three years as President of the Ohio University Equestrian team. A few years ago, she went looking for a new gym and ended up with a fitness family. “Up until that point in my life, I had never been surrounded by so many inspiring and motivating people. It lit a fire in me to want to be better: in the gym, at work, at home, and just as a human being.”

After a couple of years of training, Brittany decided to take the next step. She wanted to become a coach so she could help others achieve their goals. “Personally, learning and sharing experiences with people from all walks of life has been an extremely eye-opening and rewarding experience.”

Coleman’s love for CrossFit started early on. While in college, he started his own CrossFit club that met several times a week. From there, he joined Ohio Strength and everything fell into place. He acquired his Level 1 certificate and began changing lives. Coleman’s coaching style is very simple: It’s all about progress. One of the quotes he lives by warns against the dangers of being stagnant. “Mediocrity is as close to the bottom as it is to the top, and will give you a lousy life.”

Rebecca’s fitness history starts with eleven years of commitment to dance. She was a bunhead, living, eating, and breathing ballet. The commitment to performance and perfection contributed to an unhealthy relationship with food and a dysmorphic body image. After discovering the disorder, her mother forced her to quit dance in high school. “Ballet was my identity,” Rebecca explains, “Losing it, even though it was for my mental and physical health, left me lost and depressed. I needed another physical activity to fill the void.” Rebecca started going to step aerobics at a local gym. She loved being able to exercise without the excruciating attention to what her body looked like in skintight clothing. Rebecca knew the physical activity was essential to her health and happiness. Now she knew it could take a form other than ballet.

Up until two years ago, Rebecca was resistant to CrossFit believing that it was too high-risk for injury. “I had no interest or intention of doing it. But over the years, I realized my own workouts were trending in that direction.” When owner Ryan McFadyen offered a generous free trial period, Rebecca gave it a shot. After the fundamentals classes, she was hooked and regretted not trying CrossFit sooner. “Any physical activity, if done improperly, puts the participant at risk for injury. CrossFit gets a lot of publicity, both good and bad. In actuality, the comprehensive focus on fitness and activity modifications make it effective for all populations. I’m absolutely in love with it and now know what it feels like to be part of an athletic team.”

Emily began coaching weightlifting in 2011 while teaching high school in Orlando, Florida. After moving to Colorado in the summer of 2015, she earned her CF-L1 and began coaching CrossFit. In her younger years, Emily was a competitive dancer, but the subjective nature of that sport ultimately fueled her passion for weightlifting and distance running. She has always enjoyed the objective measure of success in these sports; the numbers on the clock and on the barbell never lie, and this objective and measurable nature drove her to fall in love with CrossFit. Additionally, her experience in coaching youth weightlifting fueled her desire and love for coaching CrossFit. She has always been inspired by her athletes’ ever-growing confidence and the effect that the sport has beyond the numbers measured at the gym. She finds that there’s no greater feeling than those that arise from helping individuals of all ages and athletic backgrounds improve their physical, and more importantly, their mental health, through the community of CrossFit.

Nick’s energy and enthusiasm for people and sports came at a very young age. Growing up, Nick played every sport under the sun including gymnastics, baseball, basketball, and soccer until he found his passion for Lacrosse and Football in High School. Nick went on to play Wide Receiver for four years at the University of Mississippi. During his time playing football, the strength staff at Ole Miss started introducing different HIIT variation workouts during the summer off-season days. These different style workouts, opposite of the traditional strength training, piqued Nick’s interest because he saw how it helped translate to better performance on the field.

After graduation and his playing days, Nick needed something to keep his competitive side sparked and was tired of having to come up with his own workouts alone. He dropped into a Crossfit gym after watching a few videos online and talking to friends. He found something drastically different than what he expected: a team and community unlike any other. The people he worked out with quickly became his best friends and his “fitness family.” Nick’s passion for people and fitness drove him to want to become a coach. He wanted to help people achieve their goals and aspirations while bringing positive energy and cultivating a culture with no barriers. “I want to be a part of the best hour of someone’s day. When they come into the gym, I want to make sure they feel the positive energy and are driven to become a better version of themselves.”

Being raised in the Timko household, the three most important things were faith, family, and sports. Growing up Bruce traveled and competed in a variety of sports including basketball and golf in High School. Bruce went on to play golf at The Ohio State University for four years, where he was introduced to organized Olympic lifting and HIIT workouts for the first time. Bruce loved how these types of workouts pushed him and his teammates both physically and mentally, and how the experience brought them closer as a team. After graduating college, Bruce really started to miss that community while working out, and quickly became tired of going to a local gym and working out on his own. He began looking into other alternatives and started talking to a friend about CrossFit. She recommended that he check out Ohio Strength. It did not take long to realize what made CrossFit special. It motivates others to strive to improve themselves in all areas of wellness, all while building a fitness family to support each other. Having the opportunity to help others have this same experience in a fun and welcoming environment is what motivated Bruce to become a coach, and he hopes he can be a part of helping them achieve their fitness and wellness goals.

Since high school, the balance has always been a key part of Kaleb’s life. Both in high school and at Ohio State University, he has worked to maintain a sound mind, sound body, and sound spirit. That remains true to this day. You’ll usually find Kaleb working on his career in IT, in the gym, or raising money for cancer research and riding in Pelotonia.

After being introduced to CrossFit and the Ohio Strength family, Kaleb soon realized that fitness was just one piece of the puzzle. He realized “The workouts get you in the gym, and the community keeps you coming back.” This is what motivated Kaleb to obtain his Level 1 Certificate. Kaleb walks in every day with the intent to create a culture where members are striving to live balanced lives and hopes he can be a small part of that.

Andrew began CrossFit in February 2013 and has been hooked ever since. The fitness aspect of CrossFit mixed with the community and relationships that CrossFit helps to forge is why he is so passionate about it. After going through his own weight loss journey prior to CrossFit and losing over 100lbs, he was looking for that next step in remaining active and healthy. After doing CrossFit for 5 years, numerous people reached out for advice and tips on working out and nutrition-it was time to pursue his CrossFit Level 1 certification to begin helping others. Not just in their weight loss journey, but in setting and helping to reach goals that they set for themselves.

He currently works full-time in the healthcare industry and is working with people on his team to help them pursue their goals both personally and professionally. He received his L1 in the summer of 2018 and has been coaching ever since. “I love developing relationships with others and building their trust so that they are comfortable in what they do every day. With my passion and drive to continue my coaching career, I am currently starting to pursue my L2 to broaden my own horizons and learn as much as I can so that I can continue to take my knowledge and help others, as well.”
